Decrypted Journal, Falinthris' Cipher, Finagle's Locked Box, Journal of Falinthris, Strange-Looking Key

You spoke with many at the Citadel of the Fiends about the Journal you found in Dralnok's Doom and finally were sent to speak with Eilen at the Tower of Magery. She sent you to recover a Tome she had lent to a fellow mage while she decrypted the writings by Falinthris. But her efforts failed and she could not locate a Cipher. Now, she believes one may be found at a forgotten stronghold deep within the northern mountains.

Quest text[edit]

<player>, do not fret! The cipher may still be found. You see, I have discovered that Falinthris rarely visited this Tower even before The Cleansing.

  • Was he in Tazoon then?

We are fortunate that he was not, for all of his work may have been destroyed! No, it would seem that Falinthris was a hermit of sorts and had a tower of his own deep within the mountains of the Frozen Wastes where he would not easily be disturbed.

  • Where is this tower?

Speak with Eilen the Mage

It took some digging, but it seems it was located to the east on the southern slopes of the Peak of Adan'jat. I can't be more specific than that, I'm afraid.

Locate Falinthris' Tower within the Frozen Wastes. Hint: Eilen said that it was on the southern slopes of the Peak of Adan'jat. The peak is located east of the Tower of Magery.

Game Feedback: You have located the Frozen Tower, ancient home of the Archmage Falinthris.

Use the Strange-Looking Key to open the Ancient Chest located within the Frozen Tower and recover the Cipher of Falinthris

Game Feedback: You've recovered the Cipher! Return with it to Eilen the Mage so that the Journal can be deciphered.

Welcome back, <player>. What did you find at Falinthris' Tower?

  • I found the cipher! Here you are.

Return to Eilen the Mage with the Strange-Looking Key and Falinthris' Cipher at the Tower of Magery

Excellent, <player>! I will decrypt this journal post-haste. Give me a moment please.

Wait for Eilen to finish decrypting the Journal of Falinthris

Game Feedback: Eilen has completed the decryption and is waiting for you at the Tower of Magery.

Speak with Eilen at the Tower of Magery about the Decrypted Journal

Good, there you are, <player>. I have completed the decryption and have transcribed the journal for you. Here is your copy, good journeys and thank you for recovering the lost Cipher.

Welcome back, <player>. You seem elated, which I hope means that you have good news for me.

  • <You tell him about Falinthris' Tower and the cipher you found>

Fascinating! You managed to decrypt the journal, I did not think it was possible. Oh, entropy, I can't wait to read it. May I?

  • Certainly. Here you are.

Take the Decrypted Journal to Finagle in Delgarath

Oooh. Please give me some time to read it's contents, <player>, and we shall speak again.

Wait for Finagle to finish reading the journal

Game Feedback: Finagle has finished reading the decrypted Journal of Falinthris.

Oh my, <player>. Where to begin. Falinthris, he was a genius and this journal contains notes regarding much of his work with concepts and items outside of the realm of magic. In particular he wrote much about the nature of keys and of chests. It seems centuries ago they were found on rare occasions and Falinthris traveled far and wide to find them and study them.

  • <continue>

At some point he spent time discussing the nature of keys and of unlocking chests with the Academy of Tinkerers in Old Rachival. Imagine that, <player>! That ancient Gnomes knew of keys and of chests, but the knowledge was lost. Likely with the fall of my homeland. A sad day indeed.

  • <continue>

But I digress... Falinthris wrote what he learned from the Academy in his journal, including detailed blueprints of how to make keys. <player>, it seems there are two varieties - enchanted and mundane. Each type requires its own type of key and the journal contains instructions for creating them. Unfortunately I have discovered that the patterns for enchanted keys are not found in the journal, so extra effort may be needed to locate them.

  • What of the special, skeleton key you spoke of before?

We are in luck, <player>. While the making of enchanted keys is not in this journal, the making of the skeleton key is. Hey... what is that noise?

Speak with Finagle Biggletorque in Delgarath about the Journal of Falinthris

Oh, it seems my new assistant is back.

Wait for Finagle Biggletorque while he's speaking with his assistant

Game Feedback: The discussion was short, but Finagle seems enthusiastic. Speak with him again.

I forgot to tell you, <player>: I have sent a report with my first findings of research about Falinthris Journal. They were delighted and they have provided me with an assistant!

  • I would have got good use of him to help me with this journal!

I am sorry, but I needed an experienced adventurer for that. He's not and I had already sent him on a mission.

I did some research on Falinthris and, for once, the Fiends of Kirasanct were motivated to help. It seems your scavenger hunt was the latest trend for gossip in the Citadel lately and they wanted to know more about Falinthris. We were able to find a mention of his home and its location in some old documents. He lived pretty far from Kirasanct. My assistant went there to find anything of interest. Only rubbles covered by vegetation are left; he rummaged among them, dug a bit and found an old pouch.

  • What is in the pouch? You seemed excited earlier.

You won't believe it, <player>. The pouch contains a few copies of Skeleton Keys! Falinthris was not only able to write down a method to craft these keys but he has made them by himself.

  • This is quite a discovery!

And that's not all. There is also a box which is locked. These keys can probably open it.

  • Then, what are we waiting for?

Speak with Finagle Biggletorque again

You have helped me a lot. Without you, I wouldn't have this journal and these keys in my hand. Could you make me the honor to open this box?

Open Finagle's Locked Box by using a Skeleton Key

Game Feedback: The Skeleton Key is inserted effortlessly into the lock. You turn it and a loud click can be heard. The box is now opened: show it to Finagle.

So, it works that way. Fascinating. What was hidden inside the box? A Tech Kit and a method to find other Locked Boxes? I have no use for these items.

Please take them, <player>. An adventurer of your caliber will find them useful, I'm sure. Take also the other keys which were in the pouch. I'm not interested in using them and finding treasures: I only want to understand how they work and how to make them. With this journal, what was only a fantasy a few days ago is now a reality I can nearly touch. It's only a matter of time.

  • I hope you will discover it soon.

Speak to Finagle Biggletorque and show him the opened box

Thank you for all that you have done. And if one day you master tinkering arts, we may discover it together. That would be an honor.
