The fall of Tazoon has created chaos and confusion throughout the region. Many refugees have fled to camps and villages nearby, but some have yet to be found. At Guard Devin's request you sought and found Grant Smyth, a prisoner who escaped during the exodus. You spoke to Grant's father, Jeffrey, in Dalimond, but on your return you were attacked by an assassin of the Penumbral Edge. The time has come to decide the ultimate fate of Grant for you must tell Devin something.

Quest text[edit]

Grant tells you, I've never had anyone try to kill me before, have you <player>? I wonder... Did you speak to my father in Dalimond? You did? What did he have to say?

Grant tells you, He told you the story of how I found my lucky stone? Ugh, he tells everyone that tale. Me, and the Ulmus Beetle nest, and a pile of stones. Good grief. Still, I suppose it means he cares and he is proud. That says something, doesn't it?

Grant tells you, You won't tell him about the assassin, will you <player>? He would worry too much, probably try to stay here with me or take me back with him to Dalimond. Oh...

Grant tells you, Speaking of Dalimond, perhaps the assassin followed you back here to me? If they were watching my father, they would have seen you speaking with him. I hope they haven't harmed him!

Grant tells you, No matter how they found me, I think the time has come for me to make a decision about my fate. Choose to live and turn myself in, or choose to go into hiding and find a way to make others think I am dead. What do you think I should do, <player>? I'll make myself ready for either path you choose.

Choice 1[edit]

Grant tells you, Turn myself in, you think? It would be the honorable thing to do, that is true, and given the state of the city it is possible that they might be too busy to imprison me again. Plus, where would they put me, <player>?

Grant tells you, I wonder, would they lift my sentence? Stranger things have happened, <player>. Yes, you do speak sense and you have made a compelling argument. Place myself upon the mercy of the remaining bureaucracy of the Empire, let the cards fall as they may, as they say.

Grant tells you, I have one remaining concern, <player>, and that is the Penumbral Edge. The people who sent the assassin here are powerful and do not let go of their grudges lightly. Without you to stand alongside me, I would not stand a chance. They would kill me outright! Will you stand alongside me?

Grant tells you, Yes? Good. Then, I would ask that you speak with Devin and bring him here to my camp. I'll turn myself in to him and only him.

Devin tells you, <player>, welcome back. What did you find out there? We've heard the soldiers speak of raiding parties and of general chaos. These Welger sure do sound like they are formidable and organized. Is it true?

Devin tells you, You found Grant? He lives? And he wishes to turn himself in? Well done, <player>, well done indeed. Head back to his location, I'll follow your tracks and I'll get this taken care of.

Devin tells you, So you were hiding here...

The two men are staring at each other.

Grant tells you, I see you Devin...

Devin tells you, Yes, it is time for you to face justice, Grant.

Grant shouts, 'I surrender! What are you doing!?'

Devin tells you, It is done, <player>. Justice has been served.

Devin tells you, I am surprised, however, that you were able to dispatch both of my assassins. I will have to speak to my contacts about the Penumbral Edge. Perhaps they are not as formidable as they claim.

Devin tells you, Here, this was on the body and looks as if it might be valuable. Call it a finder's fee, if you will. Farewell <player>. Pray we don't meet again.

Choice 2[edit]

Devin tells you, <player>, welcome back. What did you find out there? We've heard the soldiers speak of raiding parties and of general chaos. These Welger sure do sound like they are formidable and organized. Is it true?

Devin tells you, So, the Welger are an invading army and there is chaos and death throughout the desert. I am not surprised after seeing what happened in Tazoon. Did you have something else for me? You found Grant? Truly?

Devin tells you, He's dead, is he? You are sure then?

Devin tells you, I appreciate the news, <player>, but I'm afraid I can't take your word for it. Please take me to his body, so I can confirm it myself.

Devin tells you, So <player>, where is the body?

Devin tells you, You lied to me! He stands there, plain as day!

Grant tells you, <player>, what have you done?!

Devin tells you, You fool, <player> has done precisely what was requested. You have been located and now justice will be served once and for all.

Grant tells you, I had no choice, <player>. It had to be done.

Grant tells you, Of course, it did! Why would you think otherwise? This way you can tell everyone I am dead and no one will be the wiser. Here, now, what is this? A letter of some sort?

Grant tells you, It is stained with blood, but it appears that Devin was ordered to kill me by whatever means necessary. Here, take it <player>.

You have received 1 Blood-stained Note.

Grant tells you, You have my thanks, <player>. With Devin dead and no one but you left who knows where I am, I should be safe for a time. Take this, it may serve you as well as it has me. Until we meet again.
