Java seems to be missing[edit]

JVM error.jpg

If you encounter the error to the right, your Java may not be installed correctly and Companion cannot start. Please return to the main site and download the latest version and install it again.

Some of the previous versions of Istaria Companion did not deliver a Java Runtime Environment. Usually the most recent version should fix the error.

Companion fails to start with an error[edit]

Run as admin.jpg

If you encounter an error looking like the one to the right, Companion needs write access to it's install folder. You can achieve this with the following steps:

  1. Open Windows Explorer
  2. Browse to the install directory of Istaria Companion. If you didn't choose another when installing, this should be
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria Companion
  3. Right click 'Istaria Companion.exe', then select 'Properties'
  4. Select the 'Compatibility' folder
  5. Check 'Run this program as administrator'
  6. Confirm by pressing the 'OK' Button

After that the program should start fine. Alternatively you can install the program to a different folder, outside of Window's standard program folders. There you won't need to provide administrator rights.

  • Why does Istaria Companion require administrative rights?

The program's databases are saved into the installation directory (also IC's log files). If you chose the default directory on install, Windows considers this as a 'secured directory'. By default there is no write access granted for it but IC needs write access.

I get an error 13 when starting Companion[edit]

This indicates that the Java version is a wrong one (maybe a too old version or a 32bit one). Please download the latest version of Istaria Companion which includes a Java Runtime Environment, and install again.

Program asks how a link should be opened[edit]

HowDoYouWantToOpenThis.jpg

Microsoft Windows does not initially know how to open web pages, so it asks you how it should open it in the future.

  • On the shown dialog, select your favorite web browser (examples: Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Opera, Google Chrome,...)
  • Check the 'Always use this app' box
  • Confirm by pressing 'OK'.

After that, links are opened automatically in a correct way.

Workspace cannot be locked[edit]

This happens when you're trying to start the same Companion installation for a second time. If you're sure Companion isn't running, try a restart of your computer, this should fix the problem.

If you would like to use two Companions at the same time, please refer to this article.
