Quest Text[edit]

Your knowledge and skill in the art of gemworking is impressive. You may now train to become a Lairshaper. Once a lost art among our kind, Lairshaping has recently returned to our world with the reopening of the Gate of Embers. It is a prestigious path for you to consider as you grow. If you wish to start on this path, you will need to speak with the master of the School of Lairshaping, an ancient dragon by the name of Relstaroth. You can find him in his lair, north of the city of Dralk, past the mountain with the Gate of Embers, and south of the great Statue of Drulkar.

You seek knowledge of Lairshaping, do you? Delving chambers and corridors out of the solid earth, creating the tradional bastions of our people? That is our craft! The lesser races understand not our intricate ways. We will keep it so. I see that you have some skill in the ways of gemworking. You may be competent to study in our school, <player>. However, that does not mean you are yet worthy to be initiated into our secrets. That, we shall test.

Do you know from whence this high and secret knowledge comes? You surely have heard the old dragon adage, 'those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it', yes? I'm sure you can understand that much has been lost in the depths of time. We have, regrettably, repeated many of our mistakes. I hope to avoid that error with any new students I might take on.

Yes, well, we shall see. All depends on you and what you make of my test. Most before you have failed, as will many more in the centuries to come, to be sure. Now, where was I. Oh yes! Perhaps you are wondering where this wondrous craft began? How did the incomparable constructions you see around you in the mighty city of Dralk come to be? And how did they endure countless centuries in testament to the skill of dragons whose names have long since passed beyond legend?

Millennia ago, the most skillful of our race, which then was quite fledgling, were called together by Drulkar himself. Upon them, he bestowed all the knowledge of the shaping of metal, stone, crystal and all the resources of Istaria for the enrichment of our people. To the four winds he bid those few to fly, to help bring the Age of the Dragon to it's height, to pass on what he taught. This knowledge was passed down from dragon to dragon without fail. That is, until the human uprising and the growing division among our people broke the chain Drulkar had created. It was then that the Elders left and we left with them to protect the knowledge that we possess. To the Realm of Earth we traveled, through the Gate of Embers. And there, among the stark beauty of endless caverns, we delved new lairs and practiced our trade, biding our time until the moment when this world would once again welcome us home.

And then the Gate of Embers was re-opened and we felt that the time had arrived for us to return and fulfill Drulkar's mandate. I say us, for I was not alone. I had my greatest student, Balennos, with me in exile. Together we returned and began to explore the world anew, assessing the effects of the ages gone by. Much had changed, <player>, and we were eager to discover the locales, dangers and wonders.

As we travelled, I began delving entrances to new lairs, marking some for future development, and gather the recent lore of the land. The naka-duskael have done much in recent years, caused much pain and suffering. I sense the land yearning for our return, to know again the ancient ways of Lairshaping. I wish to continue on the path that Drulkar opened to us, and return our people to their glory once more!

If you would help me, you must first prove that you can follow simple directions and work the raw materials of this world properly. I give to you the formula for tri-cut gems, lodestones and cast stones. Each is a basic component, an intermediate resource forming the foundation of Lairshaping. If you succeed, you will later learn to combine them into the more complex forms used to shape your creations. For now, content yourself with processes for crafting these basic components. They will take you far on the path to reviving the splendor of old. Scribe these formulae, then go make twenty (20) of each. Present your efforts for my scrutiny once you have completed this simple task.

Well done, <player>. There is hope for you after all. Yes, these components are passable, for the time being. Fear not. You will gain skill with time, for you will craft many of these stones as you progress. I believe that you may indeed be worthy of honoring the traditions of our craft, <player>. However, my apprentice, Balennos, is more proficient in the art of crystalshaping than I am, so I will have him further your education on this topic.
