Help Fillet settle a dispute with Velma, the confectioner trainer in Dalimond.

Quest text[edit]

Fillet tells you, Aha, would <player> be interested in - what has <player> found today? Ah, sage! An excellent garnish for many dishes. Fillet will be happy to instruct <player> in the preparation of sage, but first Fillet must instruct Velma, the confectioner trainer in Dalimond, in a matter of logic and common sense. Would <player> be willing to help?

Fillet tells you, Wonderful! This task is very simple. Fillet needs <player> to harvest 50 Istarian fungus and draw 40 measures of water. Take them to Versanto in New Rachival and wait while he washes & weighs them. Why? To prove that fungus does not become waterlogged of course!

Fillet tells you, Velma is an excellent confectioner and is a far better choice for adviser to the Imperial Council than Fillet would be. However, Velma has some very old-fashioned ideas about food, especially fungus. Velma apprenticed to a dwarven confectioner named Goram Ironfist. Goram Ironfist was master of the kitchens in Aughundell during the Third Siege. It is Fillet's opinion that spending thirty years developing new ways to serve cavern fungus meal after meal would be enough to drive even a dwarf mad.

Fillet tells you, Simply because dwarves lived on fungus for thirty years does not mean dwarves know everything. Goram Ironfist had to conserve water whenever possible. One way to do this was not to wash fungus or tubers. Rub the dirt off a tuber before peeling it and the tuber does not need washing. For fungus, Goram Ironfist insisted that dirt be removed by brushing it off. To this day, many dwarven confectioners believe that getting fungus wet causes it to become waterlogged and lose flavor.

Velma is asking the Imperial Council to require confectioners to make their own fungus brushes from gruok bristles and use them to brush fungus clean. Foolishness! The bristles come loose and dirt gets left on the fungus and both of them get mixed into your food, and that is just not good eating! Fillet thinks this is a terrible plan, and has contracted with Versanto to prove the truth of the matter.

Collect 50 Istarian Fungus and 40 water, then deliver them to Versanto in New Rachival.

Fillet tells you, Fillet needs <player> to harvest 50 Istarian Fungus and 40 units of water as quickly as possible. Take them to Versanto in New Rachival. Versanto will study how much water the fungus soaks up, if any. When Versanto's report is complete, please return to Fillet. Fillet will have the recipe for rubbed sage ready for <player> by then, and may have a little something extra as well.

Versanto tells you, Yes, yes, what is it? Ah, the mushrooms for that silly test Fillet was going on about. Quite silly, really, flavor compounds are an intrinsic property of a substance and can't just be washed off unless you're using some type of viscous material that has highly corrosive interactions with the subject substance. Well, don't just stand there blinking, give me the test subjects. This will only take a few minutes, so please don't wander off and don't touch anything, especially anything shiny and/or blinking unless you have a surplus limb issue you need to have percussively corrected.

Versanto tells you, Yes, yes, the results. The conclusion is conclusive: the fungus in all tests absorbed only a small percentage of water weight. The structure of fungus is such that it does indeed rapidly absorb water, but these fungus caps cannot soak up enough to become waterlogged because they are already full of water! How? They live in moist environments and draw it out of the air! Please, this isn't portal science. Here is a copy of my report for Fillet, as agreed. I will file the original with the Imperial Council myself. If that's all you require, good day!

Fillet tells you, <player> has the results already? Remarkable! Many, many thanks for such swift service. Now, what were Versanto's results... A moment, please, while this one reads...

Yes, excellent, this turned out just the way Fillet knew it would. Velma may argue with Fillet, but Velma cannot argue with science! Now, here is the rubbed sage form Fillet promised, and a small token of Fillet's gratitude for the assistance <player> has provided in this matter.
