There is now an alternate quest line where you observe but do not have to slay The Lone Wolf. If you observe without slaying and check in with Braekhis, you get an optional quest (called The Lone Wolf: Spare Lone Wolf) where you can sneak over to leave some food for the wolf in his lair, after which you are gifted The Wolf's Blessing.
