Quest Text[edit]

You have received a new quest - 'An Ancient Journal'.

This ancient book appears to be of Saris origin, judging from the symbol of Merrasat on the cover. You should take it to Lady Kendra in Kion.

Kendra tells you, Good day, <player>. What have you there? An ancient book, from the deadlands you say? Most interesting. I would like to hear more about it, but Geleon the Wise is our resident scholar. Please take the book to him.

Geleon tells you, A book from the Deadlands? Most intriguing. Once, long ago, that mountaintop was known as the Fortress of Kiatar, <player>. How fantastic items such as this remain undisturbed! Artifacts of that age are very rare indeed. The Trandalarans burned or destroyed just about everything they weren't able to steal. Let's see it then.

Geleon tells you, Oh dear, the centuries have not been kind. I dare not open the pages until we are able to insure its preservation. I will need some Lesser Mummy Wrappings, <player>, to re-bind the book. The magic that holds the undead together should suffice for this book as well. Four wrappings should do. I believe Marcus keeps a supply of them in stock.

Geleon tells you, Excellent. There, that should hold it together for a time. Please give me a few moments to review the book.

Geleon tells you, <player>, this is indeed the personal journal of Emir Bar'Akath! *he claps his paws together* This is very exciting! There is much more research to be done here, my friend, for it is written in an ancient dialect of the Saris. Translating it may take me many months... even years. But now you should speak with Lady Kendra about this momentous discovery.

Kendra tells you, Geleon was able to repair the journal? And it truly contains the personal writings of Bar'Akath? Fascinating! There is more to this story, <player>. Would you hear it?

Kendra tells you, Millennia ago the Sorcerer called Nazderon founded a great city in the Barasavian Desert that he called Mellohndar. To build his grand city he hired a number of Saris architects and engineers to design and oversee the construction. A Master Artisan, considered one of the most talented of the age, by the name of Caer Lafin did much of the carvings and statuary for that lost city.

Kendra tells you, Years later, after Caer had returned to Kion, he took a small block of the purest white marble and crafted it into the likeness of Merrasat the Giver. It is said that the statue was so perfect in its rendition of the goddess that she visited the artisan and placed her blessings upon the carving.

Kendra tells you, Soon thereafter, Caer returned to Kion with the family. Over time his fortunes flourished due, it was believed, to the blessing of the goddess herself upon the statue he kept on a shelf in his home. The Effigy of Merrasat, as it became known, remained with the Lafin family for generations.

Kendra tells you, Centuries later the coasts of Lesser Aradoth were no longer safe because ships bearing Trandalaran raiders frequently sailed the waters and Kion was sacked and burned more than once in those desperate years. To safeguard the remaining riches of Kion many of the remaining families, including the Lafin, moved their wealth to the Temple of Kiatar, far to the south near the Crystal Lakes. There, they hoped, their riches would be safe from the raiders.

Kendra tells you, A thousand years ago, and many centuries after Caer Lafin's time, the Emir Bar'Akath, leader of the Saris, retreated to the Temple to hide from increasingly deadly raids on the coasts. He evicted the Priests of Merrasat and converted the Temple into a Fortress. The Priests, angry at their expulsion, pronounced a doom upon Bar'Akath and his Fortress. They proclaimed that he would find no peace, even after death, and his efforts would bring naught by suffering.

Kendra tells you, Two years later, emboldened by the thought of riches within the Fortress, a large army of Trandalaran Raiders attacked and destroyed Kiatar. The Emir and his guard were slain and buried beneath the smoldering ruins of the fortress. The Priests' Doom was complete and the mountain-top was abandoned.

Kendra tells you, But what of the Effigy, <player>? Though it was long believed to be a blessing to my people, it was lost along with much of the wealth that had been safe-guarded in the fortress by Bar'Akath. The raiders took much of the wealth of my people and returned to their homeland on Trandalar. The fate of the Effigy is a mystery, <player>, though many among us have long believed that it was taken back to the north along with the rest of the wealth.
