Quest text[edit]

Sindenis tells you, Good to see you again <player>! Tomas has gotten word to me that the Archwizard is planning on setting an enchanted gemstone into the locket? Interesting. Did he say what led him to do that?

Sindenis tells you, So he firmly believes the locket is imbued with some kind of protection? I suppose that really is likely then, given the nature of the inscription. So is Bastea working on shaping the gemstone?

Sindenis tells you, Oh, she isn't? Who is? Ellynor? In New Rachival? Hmm. I see. I've not worked with her before, nor can I say I'm familiar with her work, but, if she is the only jeweler willing to shape the gemstone, then I suppose we must trust her skills. With any luck, everything will turn out alright. So you are just waiting for her to finish working on the gemstone? Well, in the meantime, I have a task for you. I need you to gather one carapace from each kind of beetle in Istaria.

Sindenis tells you, Haha! I'm just kidding <player>. You looked like you could use a bit of a laugh. You've already done an amazing amount of work, and I'm very grateful for everything you've done. None of this could have happened without you and your efforts. Does the Archwizard know that the gemstone is currently being shaped? Perhaps you should let him know in case he needs to make any additional preparations for when the gemstone is ready.

Thurid tells you, The gemstone is being shaped now, as we speak then? Excellent. Things are coming along wonderfully. I can't wait to see if this works! Well, I mean, of course it will work. At least, it should. After all, I came up with the idea. You young whippersnappers couldn't come up with this sort of plan. No no. You don't have the knowledge or experience! That's what I say. You know it's true too, otherwise you would have come up with the plan, wouldn't you? That's right. I bet you don't even know what the plan is, do you?

Thurid tells you, The plan is that once this gemstone is shaped, we're going to have it placed into the locket! Ha! You never saw that one coming, did you? You had no idea! Well, it gets even better than that! Oh yes, yes it does. You see, the locket itself has a magical charm placed upon it to help defend against Flame magic, and now the gemstone has been enchanted to be able to contain Surtheim's Living Fire! Do you have it figured out yet?

Thurid tells you, No, you probably don't. Allow me to explain it for you in simple terms. You see, when we put the now enchanted gemstone into the fitting, it will react with the inherent protection properties of the locket, and thus, create a natural receptacle for the Living Flame to adjoin itself to. So, rather than the flame hurting you, it should, in theory, be attracted to the gemstone, and become trapped within it. This is all theory of course. We won't know for sure if it will work until Surtheim actually tries to kill you. Don't worry too much though. I'm fairly confident this will work. Why, I'd bet your life on it! Ha!

Thurid tells you, What? Oh yes, yes. Sutheim trying to kill you is a vital part of this experim... errr, plan. Surtheim is the very essence of Flame embodied. He is the power of flame in it's purest form. Which is why we need him to use his power against you. This might be easier if the Archconjurer were still around, but no one has seen him in ages.

Thurid tells you, Terrible incident that was. It's been a long time, but I seem to remember him trying to summon something or other to this realm. Instead, he bungled the words to the incantation and summoned himself to the other realm instead. At least, that's the story I heard. Anyway, if he were around, he might be able to summon up some sort of flame-thingy that would work for us instead of dealing with Surtheim. Unfortunately, we don't have that luxury. So, I'm using what very limited knowledge I have about Summoning, which I assure is still far and away more than you can ever conceive of, to entice Surtheim from the depths of his island.

Thurid tells you, Yes. Typically, Surtheim remains within the bowels of Istaria. He doesn't naturally have a physical form, but the incantations I've been working on have called out to him. He has manifested himself on the surface now, and stays where he is strongest, which is, of course, the Volcanic Island of Fire. He had a large role in it's creation, but he did not create it himself. Still, he has the power to change the island as he sees fit. So if you have explored the island already, look around for any changes to it. Surely you will find him lurking there somewhere. But of course, you cannot face him without having the locket with the gemstone in it. Surely, you will be annihilated otherwise.

Thurid tells you, Yes, speaking of which, you should go check on it and see if it is finished. I really am eager to find out if this plan will work. So go go go! Get the shaped gemstone and bring it to me.
