Onyndriss has some suspicions about Surtheim's origins.

Quest text[edit]

Step: Talk with Onyndriss.

I am glad to see you are healthy, <player>. The Council was interested to know there was no portal detected, but with that out of the way, they had no reason to assist my research any longer. Do not look so offended - the Council does not waste its time on matters that do not pose a risk to dragonkind.

  • So what now?

Step: Defeat Surtheim ten (10) times.

I wish to look into Surtheim's origins more through the use of his allies. You had mentioned you use his allies' materia to fight against him. I know you cannot transport it to me, but in the moments that you are able to hold it, I want you to examine it. Tell me if you notice anything. That is all.

Step: Loot ten (10) Molten Stones.

Game Feedback: Surtheim's defeat comes far easier to you now. Whether that is knowledge or newfound strength, you are not sure.

Game Feedback: As the last stone melts away, you catch a wisp of magic fluttering away into the hot air, becoming nothing more than a glimmer. Curious.

Step: Return to Onyndriss in Delgarath.

Ah, welcome back, my little researcher. What have you found for me this time?

  • The molten stones seem to be nothing more than a capsule of flame magic, surrounded by lava. I don't think they're very special.

Capsules of flame magic, you say? That is indeed special. Flame magic is very hard to contain - such is the nature of the element! You cannot contain a dragon no better than you can contain a fire in a wooden box. To be able to contain the magic, you need a very thick vessel. Perhaps Surtheim chose the Maw not because of a link to the Realm of Fire, but rather, because he uses it as a vessel to contain his immense reserves of flame magic. Normal golem cores are small, hidden within the golem, but Surtheim's own body may be its entire core. The rest of it is Maw itself!

  • So Surtheim is bigger than we ever thought?

Potentially. When you pierce its armor, you are truly piercing its inner core, weakening it momentarily. You have lit the flames of my imagination! I must investigate this more. I will call for you, <player>.
