Quest Text[edit]

Burris tells you, <player>, Commander Jatell has asked me to take the lead on this one as he is... uh... occupied... at present. The presence of a blight maelstrom confirms my fears that the Withered Aegis are attempting to sneak past our defenses by establishing a foothold to the north on the other side of Harro.

Burris tells you, I need you to return to the Bruttien Homestead and speak with this patriarch, Manilius. Discover what you can about the situation and about these patrols he mentioned.

You have returned, <player>. I hope you bring good news? You are here to investigate the patrols? This is very good news! I am relieved to hear that the Empire is finally moving on this matter.

I assume you want to hear more about the undead patrols, yes? Well, I forget how long it has been going on but a few months at least. My sons spotted them one day while out cutting trees in the forest. Since then we have encountered them in the forest as well as on the road that runs south past Mithril's Anvil.

They come from the old camp up on the hill to the south. You've never heard of it? Years ago when The Lament reached Western Aradoth the Elves had a great army. For years they had fought against the Withered Aegis in the distant east, but with the death of Cirevitol, our greatest general, the army returned home to defend Feladan and the other Living Races.

Cirevitol's successor and protégé, Attios, delayed the Withered Aegis for years by fighting a slow withdrawal, but eventually even he could not stop them from crossing into Western Aradoth.

Once the Undead reached our lands the Elves, Gnomes and Dwarves all stood against them and battled across the Frontier for many years. Eventually a Dwarven King named Hadan Ironfist constructed a great wall known as Hadan's Wall that was intended to stop the frequent attacks.

Hadan's Wall was a failure, <player>. Oh, it looks impressive does it not? It runs the breadth of the continent, but there was too much for the Living Races to defend. The Withered Aegis breached it in several places and in the end Feladan and Rachival were both captured and blighted by the undead.

What about Attios you ask? Well, the undead attacked through a breach in the wall near Aughundell and the Dwarves called for help. Unfortunately the undead also breached the wall in two more places; One in the north near Rachival and another in the south near what is now South Gate.

Attios and his army raced to stop the breach and drive the undead back. They were successful and the undead were routed and driven north. But, Attios was not satisfied and he pursued the routed army north and east hoping to cut off reinforcements to the attacks on Aughundell and Rachival in one fell swoop. He failed, <player>. His advance was halted, his army surrounded, and in desperation he took refuge on a hilltop. It was to be his land stand.

You know the rest of course. Attios, Albus Tagley the Gnomian General, and King Hadan of the Dwarves were all slain in the battles that year. Aughundell was besieged and for many years was believed to have been lost. Two years later Rachival fell and three years after that Feladan itself was overcome. All seemed lost!

If not for Ryson Stormbringer at the Battle of Tazoon it would have, too. But, it would seem, the gods do still watch over the Living Races, <player>. Now, I know you didn't come to listen to this old elf prattle on about ancient history. You would be wise to speak with my son about the patrols.

Caepio tells you, By the Clenched Fist, you may be the answer to our prayers, <player>! You have spoken with my father, have you not? Good. I hate to see our hard work destroyed by the undead.

Caepio tells you, Yes, my brother and I were the first to encounter the patrols. We were cutting trees for repairs to our house when I spotted them. We hid and they did not see us. Since that day I have seen them on several occasions and have been lucky that I have not been spotted. I am a good shot with a bow and I know my way around the forest, to be true, but I am no warrior like my brother or one of the Gifted.

Caepio tells you, The patrols always travel in fives, <player>, and are composed of a leader, who appears to be a wizard of some power, and four troopers that are all spearman or rangers. They are the remains of the great army of Attios. A blasphemy! Galderos watch over their souls.

Burris tells you, You obtained intelligence regarding the patrols and the maelstrom, <player>? You destroyed two patrols as well? Well done, friend. Blinding them to your movements is a good strategy.
