Sergeant Vekh's Instructions, Reward for a Betrayal

You have discovered that Jolan may have been betrayed by his closest friends. Jolan would like for you to investigate further and if it is true, to kill his former comrades who betrayed him.

Quest text[edit]

Speak with Jolan

<player>, my memory of the battle has returned. We fought, here on this island, against Vekh and other skeletons. Vannes, Illinos and myself. We were out-numbered and quickly surrounded. While we were being attacked they shouted out Vekh's name. How did they know the monster's name? We had never heard of him before...

  • You were betrayed?

I... I was betrayed. I thought we were surrounded and they fell, but I remember that they did not come to aid me in my fight. Was this all a trap? For the treasure? It cannot be, <player>, they were my friends. To think that they might betray me to the Withered Aegis.

  • I am sorry, Jolan

As am I for what must be done next. Gifted, I have one final task for you. Find them, <player>, and uncover the truth of what has happened. Was I betrayed or was it a misunderstanding?

  • I will discover what I can.

You have my thanks.

Speak with Krianos in Kion about Vannes and Illinos

Welcome back. Were you able to locate Vekh?

  • <You tell him all that has happened>

The three of them were fast friends. Even as cubs they were hardly seen apart, scampering over the dunes, the rocks and amongst the trees. More than once I or one of the others was sent to find them after they had been gone too long. Once I even found them in the hills near an ancient mine on the slopes of Amu'merras itself! How they managed to get that far surprises me even to this day.

  • Do you know where Jolan's friends might be?

Speak with Krianos

I surely wish I did, <player>, but I'm afraid I do not. None of the three have been seen since they disappeared, they were all presumed dead. If they were near the city someone would have reported it, but you might speak with Talinse in Parsinia. He was Vannes' older brother and was often sent to find the trio when they vanished into the forest. Perhaps he knows where they are.

Speak with Sergeant Talinse in Parsinia about the three friends

Welcome to Parsinia, what can I do for you?

  • <You tell him all about Jolan and his friends>

It is sad news that you bear, <player>, but I cannot say that I am terribly surprised. They have been missing for so long, we had given up all hope of finding them alive. I trust you informed Jolan's wife, Annis, of his untimely death?

  • Yes, she did not take it well.

I would think not, the two were rarely apart and appeared to be very happy. Hold a moment, <player>. There was a report a week ago... I have it here somewhere... Ah, here it is!

  • What is it?

A report I received a week ago that may contain information useful to your investigation. I thought nothing of it at the time, there are many dangers in the forests and on the roads of Lesser Aradoth at this time... but, knowing that Jolan has been found and his companions have not.

  • What did the report say?

Two spirits were spotted within the ruins of an ancient village called Sekhar in the hills above Parsinia. The ruin has long been abandoned, but has been used by smugglers and adventurers over the years.

  • Do you think it is them?

Anything is possible, <player>, though we searched the ruin after Jolan was reported missing. One of the first places we went, in fact. I cannot count the number of times I chased my little brother and his friends into the hills and, I believe, more than once I found them at or near Sekhar.

  • Where are these ruins?

Speak with Sergeant Talinse

Not far from here. Behind this structure and beside the coconut palm grove, there is a path that winds up the hillside. You will reach a marker where the path branches, take the branch to the left. Follow it and look for the pile of stones. The ruins are not far off the path to your right. Be careful, the ruins were crawling with spiders last time I was there.

Locate the ruins of Sekhar that Sergeant Talinse spoke of. Hint: Talinse said that behind the structure he is at and beside the coconut palm grove, there is a path that winds up the hillside. You will reach a marker where the path branches, take the branch to the left. Follow it and look for the pile of stones. The ruins are not far off the path to your right.

Game Feedback: You've found the ruins and there are two undead! They appear to be vengeful and angry. Defend yourself!

Kill Vannes the Cabalist

Game Feedback: You have slain Vannes and brought about a measure of revenge for Jolan.

Kill Illinos the Sanguine

Game Feedback: You have slain Illinos and brought about a measure of revenge for Jolan.

Recover the Satchel from the corpse of Illinos

Game Feedback: You have recovered a simple leather satchel from the corpse of Illinos.

Open the Bulging Satchel

Game Feedback: You open the satchel and find a note and small bag of coins. The note appears to be orders to bring Jolan to the island for Vekh. In exchange they will be rewarded greatly.

Game Feedback: Jolan tells you, What did you discover, Gifted? What of my friends?

  • They attacked me as soon as I came close. I was forced to kill them.

Game Feedback: Jolan tells you, Oh... it is true then? They betrayed me?

  • It seems that way. I also found this note and a bag of coin on them.

Game Feedback: Jolan tells you, A note and coins? What does the note say?

  • They were paid to bring you to the island for Vekh.

Game Feedback: Jolan tells you, Paid? What I feared was true then, Vannes and Illinos were seduced by the temptations that the Withered Aegis offered and my betrayal was proof of their loyalty. Was there ever any treasure?

  • It doesn't seem likely.

Game Feedback: Jolan tells you, I fear you are correct. Ah, Vannes... Illinos, how could you? You were my closest friends and you sold me out to those monsters, condemned me to this... this hell.

Game Feedback: Illinos tells you, You were the leader of our group. Stop wallowing in self-pity.

Game Feedback: Jolan tells you, Illinos! Vannes! Why are you here?

Game Feedback: Vannes tells you, I'm... I'm sorry...

Return to Spider Isle and speak with Jolan about his former companions

Game Feedback: Illinos tells you, Not to apologize, for sure. I want to speak for myself, I don't mean to quarrel.

Game Feedback: Jolan tells you, I had my revenge. My former friends are now here with me. I will listen to them to get to the bottom of our story. But I still feel an emptiness in my soul.

  • I am sorry.

Speak to Jolan again

Game Feedback: Jolan tells you, Do not be, you did not cause this. I thank you, Gifted. You have done much for me that I cannot repay. Haha, I feel that I have given you all that I once owned! You have earned it, for it is of little use to me now. Take this last trinket and use it well.
