Ristef and the rest of the Elder Council are concerned about the future of Dragonkind. More Elders should have returned through the Gate of Embers when it was opened, but very few have. You uncovered the name of a companion who traveled through the Gate with Balennos and Relstaroth, but did not return. Balennos relayed a tale of her, but it contained little information that could be of use.

Steps[edit]

Quest Text[edit]

Valkoth tells you, '<player>, while you were away Semeneth and I delved further into the archives hoping to find additional information about Aratanosh. In our research we discovered something even more amazing than the knowledge of The Triad and their fate. --more--'

Valkoth tells you, 'Sifting through a pile of tablets and cobwebs and wishing that in the past six millennia some Dragon would have come up with a system for cataloguing the tablets that actually made sense we began to believe that Aratanosh took all of her knowledge with her through the Gate. --more--

Valkoth tells you, 'Then, to my amazement, I uncovered a tablet. Its surface was covered with cracks, the markings barely legible even beneath the magical light that hovered above the both of us. --more--'

Valkoth tells you, 'Setting it carefully down between us I summoned Primal magics and directed them into the tablet. Suddenly where the markings had been illegible, they glowed with infused energies and appeared as if they were newly placed. Symbols that had been lost to the naked eye became visible and one symbol in particular, in the upper left corner, caught Semeneth's eye. --more--'

Valkoth tells you, '"I have seen that mark before," he breathed to me. "it is the mark of Kallinoth, the first Crystalshaper." I could do little but stare wide-eyed at the tablet as if I was a young hatchling seeing an ancient first taking flight. --more--'

Valkoth tells you, 'It is said that Kallinoth ascended beneath Drulkar's Gaze before the Great One himself departed through the Gate of Embers, <player>. That she was the last ancient to do so. It is also said that she was the first to discover the power of crystals. I will quote some of what I read to you. --more--'

Valkoth tells you, '"The matrix within the crystal is infinite and able to contain the fury of the Primal magics, to channel it and even enhance it. Crystals once properly prepared may be infused, the magics directed or bent to the purposes of the Shaper." --more--'

Valkoth tells you, '"The Elders fear this knowledge for it is powerful and magics let loose on this scale can be dangerous. Only the strongest may bend the will of the crystal to their will. It is beyond even the skill of the Lairshaper, for their skill with crystals is but a mere shadow of what a True Crystalshaper may do." --more--'

Valkoth tells you, '"A catalyst is needed to encourage the magic to infuse the crystal. And a conduit must be used through which the magics are applied. This process involves..." --more--'

Valkoth tells you, 'Sadly, that is where it ended. The rest was faded even beyond my skills and part of the tablet has been removed. Perhaps to keep those who are not worthy from discovering the secrets. --more--'

Valkoth tells you, 'Now, <player>, you must take this information to Karane and we must learn more about this momentous discovery!'

Karane tells you, 'It is good that you brought the journal to me. *a hint of impatience can be heard in her voice* It must be protected at all costs for it is one of the rarest pieces of our history that has ever been found. --more--'

Karane tells you, 'I am sure you wish to find out more about its author, do you not? Kallinoth. So you would know of Crystalshaping and the first Shaper, would you? Well, there is not much but I will tell you what I can. --more--'

Karane tells you, 'You have heard the legends, of course. About how Kallinoth was the last Dragon to ascend before Drulkar left the Prime and that he observed her ascension personally. About how she discovered that you could Shape crystals. But the legends tell no more about it. --more--'

Karane tells you, 'You see, the Legends may not tell more about her, but other journals and histories do. None are first-hand accounts, I am afraid, but there is still some truth in them that we may glean. --more--'

Karane tells you, 'Kallinoth led a long life before her discovery of Shaping. The Legends do not speak of that, do they? Shaping was her greatest accomplishment, of that we can be sure. But Kallinoth was considered great among our people even before her discovery. What the Legends do not tell us was that she was in fact an accomplished Primalist. --more--'

Karane tells you, 'What is a Primalist you are asking? I was about to ask if you had heard of this before, apparently you have not. Even I had not before I encountered the use of the word in some of the oldest journals. It took me years of research to discover its meaning and I have only scratched the surface. So much has been lost, and here we have one more mystery. But I digress. --more--'

Karane tells you, 'A Primalist, my friends, was a term used in the Elder Days to describe those who explored the bounds of Primal magic. What we might call a Mage today or what the Naka would call a Sorcerer is but a small fraction of the power the ancient histories talk of a Primalist possessing. --more--'

Karane tells you, 'Kallinoth was a Primalist, one of the most powerful of her generation. And it was likely her research into Primal magic and her knowledge of crystals that led her to her eventual discovery of Shaping. But that is not all, for there is another secret I discovered that was hidden in the ancient histories. --more--'

Karane tells you, 'The Legends say that Drulkar was present during the Ascension of Kallinoth. Did you ever wonder why he was present? Others of that era are in the Legends, yet none mention Drulkar and their Ascension. It is a curious thing, is it not? As with Primalist, it took many years of research to discover the true answer. --more--'

Karane tells you, 'Kallinoth, my friends, was Drulkar's daughter. The only child of the First Dragon that we have a record of. Raised by the Greatest of us, taught the secrets of everything that Drulkar knew, and then left to lead our people after Drulkar's departure through the Gate of Embers. --more--'

Karane tells you, 'And there you have it, that is the end of my story and the extent of my knowledge. The rest you will have to discover for yourselves.'
