Now that you are ready, Ulaven the Mage wants you to use a special combat trick.

Ulaven tells you, There's something important we should discuss. It's about your armor, you see, it's... uh... not very good. Mages can only wear cloth armor, and we don't have easy access to heals. So to try to manage this... we've learned a bit of a different way of fighting.

  • A different way?

Ulaven tells you, Yes, yes! Quite an amusing way too! It keeps us safe by keeping our foes away and confused. The enemy cannot move if they're hit with a spell called binding crystals. The only downside being that attacks will break their trance. This ability is called a mesmerize, and it can be quite useful in ugly situations. We also have access to many different spells and abilities with similar functions.

  • Oh, like what?

Ulaven tells you, Spells and abilities that work like binding crystals can be put into categories - roots, stuns, and mesmerizes. A root will hold an enemy in place but not stop them from acting. A stun will stop everything for a period of time. And finally, mesmerize will stop both, but will be broken from your attacks.

Ulaven tells you, These three will cause a moment of immunity on your target after use, so be sure to time them right, as you cannot keep something permanently disabled! This goes for you, too, giving you a moment to recover.

Ulaven tells you, I want you to go out and fool some spiders to practice. The Brown Spiders inhabit an area to the west of Pratt's Pond, along the road to the windmill and by their nest. Pratt's Pond can be found by following the road southeast out of the square. Check your map to not get lost!


That's enough spiders. Be sure to use Binding Crystals then return to Ulaven the Mage.

The spiders didn't stand a chance against that dazzling spell. Return to Ulaven the Mage once you've killed enough spiders.

Ulaven tells you, Ah, that's what I like to see! I'm sure those spiders were very confused and gave you a chance to pause combat and get your bearings. Remember this trick if you need a quick getaway, might save your life - er uhm. I guess as a Gifted, that's not... necessary but, you get what I mean. Anywho, talk to me again when you're ready for more.

Steps[edit]

  • Speak with Ulaven the Mage.
  • Kill five (5) Brown Spiders. They lurk the region west of Pratt's Pond, along the road towards the windmill.
  • Use Binding Crystals three (3) times.
  • Return to Ulaven the Mage.
