With a new blade in hand, Sergeant Gaedin believes it's time for you to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of your enemies and how to best combat against them. From Wild Grulets to Beetles, you will learn new tactics.

Gaedin tells you, Alright - listen up, <player>. Time to break in the blade with a challenge and lesson regarding Strengths and Weaknesses. All creatures in Istaria have weaknesses, though it may not be clear at first sight. They also have resistances which will hinder our efforts in combat. This is where weapon types and the damage they do matter for us. The blade is a mighty weapon for slashing, but if you come across the many hard-shelled beetles in Istaria, you'll find your slashing not as effective as the crushing blow of a hammer.
- Sounds difficult... Do I need to switch my weapons often then?
Gaedin tells you, Not all the time, <player>. Combat can be turned in your favor by exploiting the weaknesses of your opponents. A spear might pierce the thick hide of a grulet, but not the tough shell of a beetle. A hammer, on the other hand, would be more useful against that beetle, while not as useful against the grulet. For today's challenge, I want you to defeat three Wild Grulets and three Small Loricatus Beetles.
- Where can I find them?
Gaedin tells you, The Wild Grulets roam the road that exits southeast of town, amidst the flax and past the farm. The Small Loricatus Beetles are found on the sandy shores of this island - particularly along the Southern Shore. Return to me once you defeat three of each. How you do it is up to you in regards to your weapon choices, since you now know their weakness and resistances.
You have defeated the Wild Grulets. Return to Sergeant Gaedin when you have completed both tasks.

Gaedin tells you, Well accomplished, <player>. Whether you have succeeded by preserving through their resistances or crushed them by taking advantage of their weakness, you have done as I asked. As you encounter new enemies and experiment with weapons, you will find some may serve with better advantage.

Gaedin tells you, Do note that not all enemies are weak to just weapons. Spells, as a part of being based in magic, have elemental or mystical affinities. Treants, for instance, are weak to fire, as you might imagine. I've seen many recruits learn a bit of the Mage school to grasp the basics of arcane damage types - fire, ice, energy - to also enhance the power of their weapons and avoid the resistances of creatures.

- Defeat three (3) Wild Grulets southeast of town past the farm.
- Defeat three (3) Small Loricatus Beetles along the Southern Shore.
- Return to Sergeant Gaedin.
