It is time you head to Fortshire and get started on your chosen path.

Quest text[edit]

Ryson tells you, I didn't speak about Fortshire for no reason, Gifted - I do believe it's time for you to head down to Fortshire to get started. You will find many trainers there who may guide you on whichever path you choose to follow. Follow the path downhill to the east from here; you can't miss it. Speak to Lauri and she'll help you find your way around the town. Good luck and may Istara guide you if you find yourself lost.

Lauri tells you, Welcome to Fortshire, dear. I'm Lauri the Cleric, here to assist you in the task of getting familiar with our little town. It's not much, just some buildings and friendly faces. Almost friendly faces, anyway. I don't think I've seen Admetus smile since he's been here. Many came to live here after their home, New Trismus, was attacked. Some were not very fortunate in battle; poor Trinket cannot even shoot her bow anymore. However, that is not important right now.

Lauri hands you a small book labeled "Quest Log". In it, you can see she has written down your current task, with your former ones magically crossed out already. Fascinating.

(Press 'L' on your keyboard by default to open your Quest Log.)

Lauri tells you, I want you to introduce yourself to the residents of Fortshire. You don't have to greet all of them, but at least say hello to the ones you'll be learning under. Doesn't matter in what order, of course - just be sure to be polite and respectful. Oh! Be mindful of Jakke. If he gets too excited, he might jump on you. Though, knowing him, he'll probably sniff everyone out for you. Make sure to give him some love if you pass by.

Once you're done, come back and speak to me so I know you're ready to move on.

Jakke tells you, Arf! Arf arf!!

(Jakke appears eager to show you something. Maybe he knows where the others are?)

Trinket tells you, Hello, hello! I'm Trinket the Scout! I'm here to show new scouts how to aim their longbows and use their swords. Being a scout is truly an amazing thing to be! I mean who wouldn't want to be the one to call out everything ahead for your friends? The first one to do so! Yes, that's what a scout does. We scout! Well, it's nice to meet you, <player>. I hope we get to spend more time together! I'm sure we will if you decide to join the Scout school! Or, well, maybe you want to hear more about the school first?

Trinket tells you, Scouts! Oh boy, where do I begin? We excel at the use of bows and crossbows and can attack enemies from far away - very, very far away! Keeping away from the bad guys is super important. We can't wear heavy armor for protection - we may understand it just as well as warriors, but the heaviest armor is just too restrictive. You can't pull back a bowstring when your arm is covered in plates!

Trinket tells you, On the off chance one of the baddies gets too close, we can use one-hand slashing, piercing, or crushing weapons - so stuff like short swords, daggers, and maces. We can use shields since we don't need our offhand for the arrows when holding a melee weapon, too! We aren't too good with melee, though, so it's definitely last resort.

Trinket tells you, Oh! Oh!! Also, us Scouts are really good at dodging. It's hard to hit someone used to dashing around and running away! What do you think? Sounds cool, right?! Want to be a Scout like me?

Trinket tells you, Welcome back to being a Scout, friend! If you don't have any stuff for it, I have some equipment you can borrow still.

Admetus tells you, I... suppose I could work with this, if you decided to become a mage. I am Admetus. I've been a mage for the majority of my life and if you choose to work with me, I can teach you how to survive this rotting world. I think. So if you want to be a mage... well, I suppose you can join if you must... or maybe you are one of that dreadful sort who wants to hear more about being a Mage before joining.

Admetus tells you, What? Why won't we wear better armor? You imbecile, we can't! As Mages, we must keep in touch with the energy around us. The arcane forces have to be felt through our skin to be controlled. Cumbersome armor like metals or leather prevent us from doing that entirely. Even a child knows this, <player>, keep up. ( Continue )

Admetus tells you, Now, where was I? Ah, yes. With our armor, we can enchant it with techniques when it is crafted to better tune our minds towards specific elements. This means we might have to carry around two or three sets of armor with us if we wish to work with all the elements at once. Myself, I prefer to keep up with the Ice element. The armor I wear is enchanted in such a way that I can keep in tune with the Ice magic around me far easier than the others, allowing me to control it more smoothly than a hothead who prefers to work with Fire or some other inferior element. ( Continue )

Admetus tells you, Of course, on the off-chance something can get close to us, we also can wield some weapons to defend ourselves in close-quarters. Daggers and staves. Naturally, this isn't our focus, so I have never bothered keeping up in such frivilous hunks of material. ( Continue )

Admetus tells you, Did that satisfy your curiosity, <player>? Good. What, do you want to become a Mage now? Good grief, I thought I had gotten rid of you by now...

Triston tells you, Hiya, and welcome to Spirit Isle! I'm Triston and you must be <player>, correct? If you decided to take the path of the Warrior, which, in my opinion, is the best path, then you will be working with me! We'll show those monsters who really is at the top of the food chain, won't we? Haha. Just tell me if you want to join Warrior school! Of course, I also love to explain the school to newcomers like you!

Triston tells you, Warriors are close range melee combatants! We can use nearly any weapon - one and two-hand slashing weapons such as swords and battle axes, one and two-hand crushing weapons like maces and mauls, and one-hand piercing weapons like spears. ( Continue )

Triston tells you, Warriors can also wear all armor types, ranging from cloth to platemail. Of course, we can't until we have learned how to wear the armor properly - can't have a clumsy fighter! A Warrior's skill in Armor Use is one of their most important skills! Thankfully, we learn that one pretty fast. The ability to use a shield effectively is also another one of our fighters' valuable skills. ( Continue )

Triston tells you, And guess what? We Warriors also gain some skill in the use of Crossbows, in order to attack our enemies from a distance! There's no ground we can't cover. Sounds awesome, right? Want to join us as a sword-slashing and shield-bearing warrior?

Wulfgar tells you, By the Mountain! A new Gifted! Welcome to Spirit Isle, friend. I am the resident Blacksmith. Whether it be forged in flame or cooled in ice, I am here to help do the heavy lifting for it. I created all the tools that built this village and I have no qualms with making more if you wish to learn to be a Blacksmith or hear more about it.

Wulfgar tells you, As a Blacksmith, I'm the backbone of Istaria's economy, <player>! Blacksmithing is one of the most versatile trades. We make all the tools that lets all of the other trades do their job in the first place. Wood, stone, metal - you name it, we can craft it!

Wulfgar tells you, Back in Mahagra, I was taught to always start in Blacksmithing. If you want to be self-sufficient, you have to make your own tools! Plus, learning Blacksmithing also allows you to get your foot into the door for nearly everything physical. Wood for Carpentry? Stone for Masonry? You got it!

Jaspine tells you, Hello, hello! A new Gifted, welcome! We need all of you that we can get. I am Jaspine - I work as a scholar. That means I can create magic from stone and essence! Neat, isn't it? Well, if you decide to study under me as a scholar, I'll be glad to teach you exactly how to do it if you want to become a Scholar too! Of course, if you want to hear about it first, I'll be glad to help!

Jaspine tells you, We Scholars specialize in the study of spells and the working of stone. We are a key part of Istarian society and magic research. With stoneworking and essence working skills, we are able to create the magic spells which we may cast.

Jaspine tells you, The spells we create are reusable forever, though each only has so much power. From stone slabs we can split bricks and from them, we may create spell shards. Etching runes into this shard creates the basics of the spell, but we do not have any magic in it yet - after all, it is a rock with some writing, no?

Jaspine tells you, We fill these runes with the essence of wisps. Wisps are magical creatures we do not fully understand - they are basically balls of energy with a mind. Don't worry - harvesting their essence does not kill them as long as you are careful. Sandstone and dim essence can create weak, but magical, spells.

Jaspine tells you, Even then, we can refine spells further. Scholars specialize in making scrolls. Scrolls are made from papyrus, more essence orbs, and a spell of your choice. What scrolls do that is different from spells is they are imbued with the magic effect of the spell itself. The papyrus absorbs the magic we pour into it, allowing anyone without knowledge to cast the spell on its own to use it, enchanting them with the properties of it.

Jaspine tells you, Pretty interesting, is it not? But a lot to take in, for sure. To recap, Scholars can create spells from stone and essence. With spells, we can then create scrolls from papyrus and essence orbs, further making our magic even more widely useful. Do you want to become a Scholar and learn these skills, <player>?

Demineth tells you, Hail! You appear to be one of the new Gifted. My name is Demineth. Unlike the others, I do not hail from New Trismus. I simply enjoy the scenery here. Plus, there are some wonderful flax plants cultivated here that I cannot resist! I am the local outfitter, so if you wish to work on finding new ways to weave and smith your armor, I'll be here to assist you. Just tell me if you wish to join or hear more about Outfitter.

Demineth tells you, Outfitting is a diverse field, dear Saris. We have a broad knowledge of fabrics, armors, and metals - we work with fabric to create clothing, for instance, while we use metals and hides for armor. Organic resources are also under our scope, though it is not our focus.

Demineth tells you, If you wish to create your own armor and gear yourself up, Outfitter is a fine choice for you. On your travels, you'll need lots of gear, so be sure to find another Outfitter out in cities if you will not create your own.

Lauri tells you, I hope you enjoy your time here and learn some valuable skills. If you're working with me, then let's get you into the Cleric school. Of course, I can also offer some information first. If not, then I wish you luck. Should you ever change your mind on what school you want to pursue, have no fear - all of us are glad to teach you no matter what school you started in. Just talk to us and we'll change you over.

Lauri tells you, Clerics are holy warriors, <player>. We draw our strength and power from our devotion to Life and our faith in our goddess Istara, the creator of this land. We draw from this strength and connection to her to heal ourselves and others with natural abilities and spells.

Lauri tells you, We are also very knowledgable in Augmentation, a form of magic. Augmentation fuels the spells we use to enhance our natural abilities, such as making us or our allies stronger or casting boons on their armor to make it defend them better. As you may notice, we're very geared towards helping our allies.

Lauri tells you, On our own, we specialize the most in one-handed crush weapons like cudgels and maces such as the one I'm holding. We can also wield shields and wear the heaviest of armor, platemail, to defend ourselves if we must. We expect not to crush our enemy before they crush us, like the warrior, but instead to use the grace of our goddess to outlast our foes.

Lauri tells you, If you feel as though you are able to devote your life to your faith, and if you know your faith is strong enough to protect not just yourself, but others too, then perhaps you may join us.
