Talbain Styrlakr, the Wolf Hunter, has a task for you. But before assigning you to it, he wants to make sure you are up to the mark.

Quest text[edit]

Greetings, Gifted. I heard you were helping the New Rachival Defense Force against the renegades. You must be a fine adventurer if the Gnomes trust you for that. I would also need a capable fighter to help me to solve a problem about wolves. Would you be interested?

  • What do you need?

Not so fast. This will be dangerous, and I need to check you are up to the task. So you will need to prove yourself with a little test...

  • Tell me about your test.

Ah, at least someone is motivated. That's a good start. I want to make sure you know the basics about wolf hunting. Travel around Istaria and kill five of these wolves: Greymane Hunters, Winter Wolves, Brownback Stalkers and Jade Snarlers.

Speak with Talbain Styrlakr

You will also need to bring me a trophy from each wolf type to prove you have done it. You will have to take them by yourself from their corpse: no cheating, hehe. Good luck, Hunter!

Hunt the wolves Talbain Styrlakr asked you for and don't forget to pick up trophies as evidence

Game Feedback: You have completed your test. Return to Talbain Styrlakr in New Rachival to tell him about your success.

Glad to see you back, <player>. How was your wolf hunt?

  • See by yourself. <You hand him the trophies you have collected>.

Congratulations! You brilliantly passed the test.

  • What about telling me about your "special" task?

Straight to the point. This is a sensible topic, <player>. The purpose of this task isn't wolves...

  • No wolves? But why did you send me killing some?

Because, it's a bigger prey, <race>: have you ever heard about werewolves?

  • Werewolves? What are they?

They are hybrid creatures which look like humanoid versions of wolves. They are cursed by lycanthropy. This curse acts like a disease: if they bite another creature, this one becomes cursed as well and transforms to a werewolf. It is still debated if the disease can only be transmitted to wolves, living races or both. In any case, it is better to avoid their fangs.

  • Do you want me to send me fighting them to change me to a werewolf? For science?

You are Gifted. Diseases can't kill you and you should resist this one as well. Anyway, salves exist to protect you from lycanthropy; they can't cure you though. Just ask the Imperial Mender here.

  • Where does this curse come from?

This is a good question, but I am not sure about it. We have a few legends about it. Have you ever heard about Karrinithos the Cursed?

  • No, I didn't.

This isn't surprising, <player>. Not many people do and little is known about him. He is a minor god who left out the Pantheon. God of Curses and Envy, Karrinithos usually assumes the appearance of a decayed or tattered werewolf. He is supposed to have infected the first werewolf. This werewolf must have spread the disease around him and it's how it has come until our era... but this is only my conjecture, I don't have any proof of it.

  • Anything else?

It is said Karrinithos is now a bright star in the sky, known as The Diamond. Werewolves are known for howling at the sky at night. Some say they howl at the moon, others say they howl at The Diamond, but who knows?

  • I don't really want to go and ask them.

Return to Talbain Styrlakr in New Rachival

Haha, neither do I. Thank you for listening to my story. Now we can discuss your new task...
