Vargas is enlisting you once more to help research Relkar’s source of power.

Quest text[edit]

Step: Speak with Vargas.

Welcome, <player>. We have learned much about Reklar since we last spoke. You see, in life, he fought as a lieutenant against the human uprising under Malganival Lunus. When bested by Vandus' army at the Battle of Bayn Hill, Reklar grew resentful of the dragons that refused to subjugate the bipeds. When it came time for dragons to join the Empire, he fled to the Aegis instead - with others of his faction, believing loyalty to dragon superiority ranked higher than that of dragonkind itself.

  • What a waste.

Indeed. Thanks to the shards you gathered, we have been able to gain an insight as to how he's been growing his army since. While those that followed him did so willingly, he has lost that opportunity now that he is a pawn of the Aegis. Instead, it appears he has been granted the ability to create an army using these shards. We need more research, but it looks like he's even been trapping his own kind.

  • What caused him to change so drastically? From lieutenant to turncoat?

Unfortunately, not much is known. Reklar kept to himself after the battle - he was gravely wounded and took the scars as a testament to his personal shame. He disappears into the background until after the great political divide among the dragons - the schism, they call it. Some fleeting words about a dragon superiority faction, fighting in the shadows, but the inner history of dragonkind is hard to find. This is where you come in.

  • I'm no historian.

Step: Defeat General Reklar Plaguebearer ten (10) times.

I'm aware, but you are an expert in combating the false general! Seek out his fortress. Search it for any hint of what drove Reklar so mad and what caused so many to follow him into the arms of the undead. Defeat him if you must to clear the way for deeper exploration.

Step: Scout Reklar's fortress for a reason he turned to the Aegis.

Step: Find any artifacts that could potentially explain the rise of the Devouring Plague faction's initial members. (Hint: Treasure piles tend to contain rare items.)

Game Feedback: As the great beast lays on the ground, you marvel at his size. What a monstrous being - truly a creature used for nothing but war.

Game Feedback: At the center of his fortress, you find an altar of sorts. It appears to be focusing magic into a sort of vessel. Reklar hovers around it constantly and it is heavily guarded. Could this be something important?

Game Feedback: Hidden among the various pieces of gathered wealth is a tablet. The words are faded and lost on you, but perhaps it is written in a language from Reklar's time.

Step: Return to Vargas the Bold at the Eastern Outpost

Back in one piece! No surprise there, <player>. What did you find?

  • A magic-concentrating altar. Reklar appears to hover around it.

Very interesting. I wonder if Reklar channels this magic into himself - a being as corrupted as he would only benefit from filling his empty soul with blighted magic. Anything else?

  • This tablet. I do not know what it says.

A tablet! Hmm... the language is lost on me as well, but this could perhaps be translated by a dragon historian. This is exciting, <player>! This research could not be done without you. The Empire is forever within your debt. Knowing what can cause an entire faction to join the Aegis may save us a dark fate in the future.
