Not all formulas are available from any trainer and can only be obtained from combat drops or quests.

Before trainers were educated in the art of accepting coin for purchases, they required Lore Tokens in trade (although the prices were still listed in coin value). A Beginner Lore Token had a value of 1 copper, and a Journeyman Lore Token had a value of 5 copper. It is important to note that in a game update in January, 2011, Lore Tokens are no longer used by trainers for purchasing formulas. They now sell formulas for coin. Formulas that are dropped as loot are no longer sold by Trainers, and vice versa.

Formulatrons sell Mystery Formula Boxes that can contain any lootable formular.

Formulas from tiers 1 to 5 can all be gained from dead mobs as loot. The upper half levels of each tier are as follows:

Monsters have been categorized: Animals, Insects, Elementals, Semi-Intelligents, Undead, Withered Aegis Constructs, Withered Aegis Animates, and Chests.

Techniques and Formulas no longer drop from your non-intelligent monsters, such as animals, insects and elementals. If you are looking for techniques you will want to hunt the Undead, the Withered Aegis, and the Semi-Intelligents (Ogre, Pygmie, Werewolf and so on).

Some types of techniques are only available as loot - Spells, Ability, Adventure, Dragon and Defense. The others are only sold by Quartermasters so you won't need to look for them as loot - Craft, Statistic and Dyes.

Formula

Overview[edit]

Formulas are the templates used to be able to craft items throughout Istaria. In order to create a particular item you first need to 'scribe' the formula (Right-Click and choose 'Scribe (Formula Name)'. Once a formula was added to your knowledge book you can use it to create one or more items.

Formulas are obtained from:

  • Creatures (looted)
    • Mobs that drop formulas are Chests, Semi-Intelligents - That is pygmies, ogres, skulks, etc, and also Undead - Skeletons, Zombies, Mummies... Formulas will only drop from Named mobs or from mobs in the upper half of each tier. Named mobs have a higher chance of dropping formulas.
      • Tier 1 mobs drop beginner formulas with skill requirements of 120 and below.
      • Tier 2 mobs drop beginner formulas with skill requirements of 110 and above.
      • Tier 3 mobs drop journeyman formulas with skill requirements of 520 and below.
      • Tier 4 mobs drop journeyman formulas with skill requirements of 510 and above.
  • Purchased from other players or consigners.
  • Awarded by accepting or completing quests.
  • Purchased from Formulatrons.
  • Purchased from trainers (Beginner, Journeyman and Expert)

Every formula requires a number of resources or sub components to create the item. For example, a Sandstone Focus Chest Scale may require up to 6 Sandstone Bricks to create.

Formula Tiers[edit]

There are four levels of formulas.

Type Min Level
Beginner 1
Journeyman 400
Expert 800
Master 1000

Products[edit]

A single formula may allow creation of more than just one item. For example, the Beginner Focus Chest Scale formula offers both, Sandstone Focus Chest Scales and Slate Focus Chest Scales. Each has a minimum skill requirement to scribe. If a character’s current skill is too low they are unable to scribe the formula. There are use various methods of increasing the current skill:

  • Boon spells, gift spells, stat potions and boon scrolls
  • Equipment with Techniques providing a bonus to the relevant skill, or stats
  • Tools, claws or armor parts with sockets. You can add crystals into sockets which increase stats or skills
  • Player built crafting shops boost the current skill level, depending on their tier.

Every product has a minimum and an optimum skill to create. When creating an item, the closer a character's skill is to the optimum skill, the more efficient they are - it will require fewer resources to make. For example, to create sandstone bricks, while you're on the minimum skill, requires 5 sandstone slabs. Creating those having the optimum skill (or higher) only requires 2 sandstone slabs per brick.

Why can’t I buy a formula from a trainer/NPC?[edit]

Not all formulas are available from NPCs. You may be able to get those from combat, quest rewards or special trades only.
