The fall of Tazoon has created chaos and confusion throughout the region. The Welger army has invaded the city but little is known about this new enemy. Lieutenant Elderincus wants to collect information to learn more.

Quest text[edit]

This camp was established to safeguard the refugees, but also to serve as a bulwark against the Welger.

These Welger, <player>, they are a fearsome enemy that gives no quarter. Where did they come from? That is the larger question that I would ask you to seek an answer to.

Amongst the refugees and others in this camp are the Learned, surely they know more of this new enemy. Inquire of them.

Brobbet's Hand, <player>, what a sorry state this camp is in. Newly founded and already disorganized! Only a Dwarf could keep something as this organized properly, but will they let me? No-o!

What do I know of the Welger? Well, as with many I was one of the lucky ones. I was in the city when the blast occurred, but was near the south gate organizing supplies. We were preparing to send a convoy east to the Imperial Outpost when it happened.

Our mission changed, to be one of rescue instead of resupply, but then the second calamity was upon us... Out of nowhere the Welger appeared! By Brobbet's Beard I am not joking, <player>!

There were fires and there was rubble, true, and we were near the south gate herding a long line of survivors out of the ruins. When suddenly five or eight Welger were attacking the refugees! They were inside the city, <player>.

I don't know where they came from, but they didn't come into the city from the south. Maybe they breached the wall somewhere? Or came in from the north gate?

The Welger? I had never heard of them before. All I can say is I was helping survivors escaping through the north gate after the explosion with a dragoness called Ambirannis.

Suddenly, the Welger appeared from nowhere and started to attack the civilians. But Ambirannis faced them and fought them to protect the people of Tazoon in a fearsome battle.

I saw her pushing back the Welger with all her strength as they began to swarm her.

I can't tell you what happened after, as myself and some of the remaining survivors became trapped outside the north gate after some rubble collapsed.

I don't know if Amibrannis made it alive, I didn't get any news from her since the events. But let me tell you: she is a hero.

Elderincus has sent you about like a rat scurrying to find a slip of cheese. One of the Gifted, running errands. What errand has he sent you about now? The Welger?

Well... perhaps Elderincus is not as great a fool as I took him for. Yes, I know a little of the Welger, not enough to stop them, but perhaps more than you. Let me see, where to begin.

The Welger were once one of the Living Races, did you know that <player>? Yes, but ages ago they fled into the wilderness of the Eastern Continent free of the influence of the Dryad and Satyr and of the Pantheon.

They are a brutish race and they live to fight, or so the legends say. Wielding massive weapons, eschewing armor and magic and poison for they believe them to be signs of weakness, and refusing to flee from combat for to do so would be a mark of cowardice.

They follow the former member of the Pantheon known as Varrantoth, the god of Strength and Endurance. He was once believed to be a boon companion of Daggarth the Cruel, god of Malice, whom the half-giants of Trandalar once worshipped.

Hello again, <player>, what are you seeking now? Information about the Welger? I find this to be a good course of inquiry. Knowing one's enemies is always a good strategy. Sadly, I know little of the Welger battle tactics, their culture, or even their weaponry. All I can do is relate a legend to you, one of Varrantoth, god of the Welger.

What of the Welger? Well, it is good you asked me <player>. You see, most know the legends of Varrantoth or have fought against these new Welger, but few that still live can say they fought against the Welger before.

Oh yes, I fought against the Welger over a century ago far to the east. I was a young elf then and had been dispatched with others of my kind as reinforcements to General Attios. He had taken over command of the Elven armies fighting against the Withered Aegis in the territory of the Satyr, beyond the Shadow Mountains.

So, there we were, marching east through dense forests and steep foreboding mountains when we were set upon by the Welger! It was a surprise attack on our column in a narrow mountain pass, perfect for ambushes.

Ambushes can be deadly, <player>, and make no mistake this was no exception. My regiment paid the price in the initial attack, losing over a third of our number, but our training took over and we quickly fell into formation.

Elven shield-walls met pure unadulterated ferocity and we fought the Welger to a stand-still and then pushed them back into the trees. It didn't take long before another regiment came up the road behind us and hit the Welger in the flank, taking them by surprise this time!

Soon the battle was over, every Welger slain for they did not retreat and would not surrender. My comrade-in-arms, Tareviel, and I were lucky to have survived, but neither of us are likely to ever forget that fight even though it was not the only combat we saw while in the east.

The Welger? They are ferocious fighters, <player>. I fought against them in the retreat from Tazoon. They fight like they have no fear! Where did they come from? I'm sorry, I do not know. They appeared out of nowhere and attacked us as we tried to protect the refugees from the city.

You have gathered sufficent informations from the people of the Imperial Army Camp.

So, what have you discovered about the Welger, <player>?

Ferocious, fearless fighters. Yes, that much was plainly obvious.

They eschew armor, spells and poisons as tools of the weak and cowardly. Well, that is no surprise but it could be that these tools will prove to be their downfall!

Varrantoth is their god and he fought Galderos and Alyssa? I'm unsure how this has any bearing upon our current situation, <player>.

Allambe fought them over a century ago in Eastern Aradoth? Fascinating. How then did they get into Western Aradoth, <player>?

Well, this is a trove of information. Some of it useful, some not. Nevertheless, I appreciate you taking the time to acquire it. Now, let me consider what more we can do about this. Thank you, <player>.
