Quest text[edit]

Obviously the explosion is on everyone's minds, <player>, and we must make an attempt to discern the particulars of it. What, where, who and, perhaps most importantly, why it occurred. Do you think you could do this for me?

That is good to know, <player>. Now, I would recommend starting with those who were there when it happened: the refugees.

What do I know of the explosion? Oh, goodness, what more is there to say? It killed so many people, <player>, and here we stand in a hastily built camp living out of our tents.

Surely there must be more you can think of?

Well... Let me think. It happened around midday and so I was in the Great Bazaar buying a pastry. I was knocked flat on my backside by the blast! Others around me weren't so lucky; some were hit by flying chunks of stone!

Where did the explosion originate?

That's an interesting question. Well, I was at the Great Bazaar. Hm. From the east towards the teleport gate I would guess. I think I remember seeing the Memorial Wall still standing as I fled, so the blast must have been within the city itself, not outside of the city walls.

The explosion? Such a terrible tune, <player>. I am one of the lucky, speaking with a friend at the Great Bazaar when the world turned upside down and was filled with such horrible music. So loud, but for such a brief moment and then the world was filled with a whine that wouldn't end.

My ears, <player>, they were damaged by the explosion. I could not hear anyone speak for hours, but somehow we managed to gather others and flee out of the south gate. It was pure chaos!

What do I know of the explosion that destroyed the city? Daggarth could not have created more chaos and suffering if he himself had attacked the city! Madness, it was. I believe I shall return back to my homeland soon, it is quiet there at times. Especially on the Isle of Winds.

You are investigating the explosion that destroyed the city? To what end, I ask? Many were killed, the city is lost.

To determine where and why it happened?

Well, I think the first thing that stands out to me would be the power of the explosion. I mean, look at where the vault from the Bank of Istaria landed!

How powerful must a blast be to throw something that large and heavy that far?

What can do something like that? It must have been an incredibly powerful spell!

What do I know of the explosion in the city? I was not there when it happened. However, that is not to say that I cannot share what I have learned since. I do possess one thing that most of the Imperial Army does not, the capability to fly.

Shortly after this camp was constructed, I was assigned here by Drulkar's Flame to offer aid and assistance. They asked me to scout the city and to search for more refugees or wounded, so I did.

You can see what happened to my wing, can you not? The welger did not take lightly to my intrusion and my wing was pierced by a projectile of some sort, probably a hurled stone.

However, I was able to see much Tazoon before I was forced to withdraw. There is a massive whirlpool of dark water that now dominates the center and eastern portions of the city. No structures that once stood within its bounds remain, and many of the structures nearby have been heavily damaged and nearly destroyed.

A few, like the Memorial Wall, close to the walls of the city, remain intact. I did not see any living within the city itself, save the Welger. That is all I know.

You have spoken to every refugee.

The explosion? Lialione thinks it was a spell, does she? She is more than likely correct, or at the very least something magical. If, as many surmise, it was near the teleport gate then it is possible that something with the gate itself caused it.

That would certainly be noteworthy. The gates are protected by many safeguards to prevent such catastrophes, but stranger things have occurred. Some sort of feedback loop in the flow capacitors or perhaps in the anodyne regulators... Without more information I'm afraid I could not say, <player>. A whirlpool... fascinating and... well, terrifying.

So, what have you discovered about the explosion, <player>?

It was extremely powerful?

Well, that was obvious, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to confirm from eye-witnesses. Anything else?

It was centered near the teleport gate?

Was it now? Rumors had mentioned that, but I had not pursued the matter further. That is a good find. Was there more?

There is a massive whirlpool in the city where the explosion occurred?

Excellent. That certainly confirms what my scouts had said. Though, they were viewing it from a great distance and from atop a cliff. To have first-hand knowledge, from the BattleMaster I suspect, is extremely useful. Were there any other findings?

Megg Geldenboot suspects that the gate itself may have malfunctioned?

Well, well. THAT is certainly news and of great concern to anyone traveling through a gate. Wouldn't you agree? Let me consider what more we can do about this. Thank you, <player>.
