Ulaven the Mage thinks it's time to upgrade your weapon.

Quest text[edit]

Ulaven tells you, I noticed your staff is looking a bit worse for wear. They are built sturdy because other classes can use them for melee combat... but as a Mage, its primary purpose is to benefit your spells by adding to your magical ability through bonuses called techniques. Let's get you a new staff so it's easier to explain.

  • Where do I get a new one?

Ulaven tells you, Ah, there are several ways! You can speak with a Militia Surplus Officer and see if they have what you need. They'll also sell basic armor, so be sure to check their wares often for potential upgrades. However, if you want something a bit more advanced, you can learn to craft weapons and armor yourself or seek the help of a fellow Gifted. Finally, you can find broken weapon pieces on intelligent creatures which can be repaired and turned into a pretty decent weapon.

  • Sounds complicated.

Ulaven tells you, It can be at first. So let's try to keep it simple and get you a slight upgrade to what you're using. Our local Surplus Officer, a fiend named Frelic, should be able to help you if you ask nicely. You can find him in the armory building at New Trismus Square by the shrine.

Frelic tells you, Hello, Elteria. Did you come to buy something from me?

  • Oh uh. Ulaven the Mage sent me to get a staff?

Frelic tells you, Ulaven the Mage? *He sighs.* He still owes me from when he set my carpet on fire! Just another thing for the tab... well, Gifted. How about I strike you a deal? If you uphold your end, I'll give you a better staff than I normally sell.

  • And what is that?

Frelic tells you, I need wood to make my staves, but the fletchers and blacksmiths aren't coming up with nearly enough. It's a bit of a run, but if you follow the path out of the southwest of town - the one that goes over the bridge - then you should eventually happen upon a forest with some treants. If you kill those, you should be able to get some wood from their corpses. Get me about... fifty, then come back here, and I'll give you a staff. Deal?

That should be enough wood for now. Return to Officer Frelic to get your staff.

Frelic tells you, Welcome back - do you have my wood? Ah! Perfect, thank you.

  • And my staff?

Frelic tells you, Oh, yes. Here you are - a Cedar Quarterstaff of Power! This is your only hand out! If you want anything else, you're going to have to buy it.

You have received 1 Cedar Quarterstaff of Power.

Ulaven tells you, Ah, welcome back, Elteria! Is that a new staff you're carrying? It looks far better than what you had before, that's for sure! I see Frelic even included a technique on it for you. How kind! Militia Surplus Officers only sell basic equipment, so you'll have to look elsewhere if you need something a bit stronger. Staffs with no techniques will not assist your combat at all, so it is good that Frelic gave you one with a bonus.

Steps[edit]

  • Speak with Ulaven the Mage.
  • Find and speak to Officer Frelic at the armory in New Trismus Square.
  • Find, defeat, and loot enough Sapling Cedar Treants to give fifty (50) Raw Cedar. The Sapling Cedar Treants are southwest of New Trismus town, along the road nearby the windmill and past the wolves you fought earlier.
  • Return to Officer Frelic with the Raw Cedar.
  • Return to Ulaven the Mage.
