As a new warrior recruit, Sergeant Gaedin has his doubts in you that you will need to prove to him that you have what it takes to be a Warrior. Impress him and you will learn how to survive and the process of what happens when you are defeated even as a Gifted.

Quest text[edit]

Gaedin tells you, Welcome to the front lines of some real danger, <player>. Spirit Isle is a vacation compared to here. Truthfully, I have my doubts that you have what it takes to endure becoming a true warrior. Are you willing to prove me wrong? Are you capable of a soldier's life?

  • Yes Sergeant, I am willing!

Gaedin tells you, Determination will only get you so far. Our ways take a direct approach often leading to many beatings, both given and taken. Let's start off with some basic facts. Unlike Clerics, us warriors do not have natural healing spells; unless you've trained as one or any class with knowledge of Life or Nature.

  • How do I stay alive then without training other skills?

Gaedin tells you, Us Warriors have our own innate ability that allows us to persevere in the heat of battle until our last breath. By now in your own confidence you have surely felt it within you to cry out an Invigorating Shout when faced with danger. That is, if you have even faced real danger yet.

  • I am ready to face danger and train, Sergeant!

Gaedin tells you, Are you now <player>? Prove it. I want you to go slay five Brown Wolves that roam the forest south of the main town between it and Trueheart Rise. Wolves are dangerous with claws and teeth that should encourage your inner resolve to stay alive with an invigorating shout or two. Come back when the deed is done.

Gaedin says, 'Let's try this.'

Gaedin says, 'You leap up and come down in a powerful twirling slash!'

You have defeated the wolves! Return to Sergeant Gaedin once you have finished practicing with Invigorating Shout.

As you call upon a third Invigorating Shout and feel your pains soothe, it is clear that this is what Sergeant Gaedin wanted you to experience. Return to him once you've killed enough wolves.

Gaedin says, 'This move has two very fast low thrusts and a powerful high thrust.'

Gaedin tells you, Consider me surprised, <player>. You have proven that you have what it takes to become a warrior. With time and training. Now to conclude today's lesson, I will inform you of what happens when you do fall in battle - and you will! That much is certain. Gifted or not, death will have its consequences.

  • As a Gifted, what consequences could dying cause me beyond the painful trauma?

Gaedin tells you, Luckily by some act of mercy it seems the penalty of death does not punish those who are under their twentieth rating; however, this kindness does not last forever. In your early adventuring days, it will be merely a painful inconvenience that you need to run back to the fray of battle. In the future, you will feel weakness and require both food and time to recover from multiple deaths.

I advise you to go talk to Devan Teater in town to learn more about food and recovery at a tavern. Take this coin and knowledge as your reward for today's training.
